After breakfast, proceed for a day trip to Kanchipuram, situated 70 kms from Chennai. Kanchipuram is one of the seven most sacred pilgrim centers for the Hindus. Kanchipuram has around 126 temples in total and a few more in its outskirts. There are several big temples, notably Ekambaranatha Temple which is one of the five form of abodes of Lord Siva, (it is the earth abode here, other abodes include Chidambaram (Sky), Sri Kalahasti (air), Thiruvanaikoil (water) and Tiruvannamalai (fire)), Kamakshi Amman Temple, Varadharaja Perumal Temple, Kumara Kottam, Kachapeshwarar Temple, Kailasanathar Temple and many more. The city has a flourishing handloom industry. Kanchipuram is home to some of the most skilled silk weavers that are producing uniquely exotic and vibrantly colorful Kanchipuram silk sarees. Such is the popularity of Kanchipuram silk that the city hosts the world famous Silk Tourism Festival in the month of October, each year. Later visit Vedanthangal Sanctuary, the oldest bird sanctuary in India. Its such a place, which can't easily fade off from one's memories. The sanctuary is an amazing place to be in, especially during the Sunset, as you can spot thousands of birds returning to their nests and dotting trees. You can spot several species of birds of which most are migratory. Some of the birds that visit the bird sanctuary every year are Grey Heron, Cormorant, Egrets, Darter, Open-billed Stork, Spoonbill, White Ibis, Grebes, Night Herons, and Grey Pelican. After breakfast, check out and drive to Mahabalipuram. On arrival, check-in to your pre-booked hotel. Mahabalipuram has various historic monuments built mostly between the 7th and the 9th century. The majority of these temples and monuments have been built by one or another Pallava kings. Kings of later dynasties too have done some additions and restoration works. These temples are very different from the later-Dravidian era temples that were built in the reign of the famous Chola kings Raja Raja and Rajendra Chola. Visit the Arjuna Penance. The Arjuna's penance is one of the most famous stone carvings at Mahabalipuram. It is an enormous relief made on two massive boulders. One of the biggest open-air rock canvases in the world, the Arjuna's penance is 31m long and 9m high. The surface of the rock has detailed carvings, showing the most endearing and natural renditions of animals especially the elephants and monkeys. The skillfully carved edifice, Arjuna's penance, is named after the Mahabharatha hero, Arjuna. The subject of the carving is either how Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, performed severe austerities so that he could obtain Lord Shiva's weapon to destroy his enemies or an illustration of how King Bhagiratha brought the River Ganges down to earth so that the souls of his ancestors could rest in peace. Also, visit Five Raths. These 'Ratha' temples of Mahabalipuram are commonly called the Pancha Pandava Ratha. These temples are considered pioneer of the Dravidian monolith and mark the point of transition between the earlier tradition of rock-carved temples and the later tradition of freestanding stone structures. There are actually eight Rathas at Mahabalipuram out of which five are named after the five Pandavas of Mahabharata and one after Draupadi. The five rathas that can be seen are Dharmaraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Draupadi Ratha, and Nakul Sahadev Ratha. Later in the afternoon, we drive you to the Shore Temple of Mahabalipuram. Shore Temple is one of the oldest temples in South India and the oldest one based on the Dravidian style architecture. It belongs to the early 8th century AD and is considered a pioneer in the Dravidian temple art. The monuments are floodlit at night in order to make it visible in the night. In fact, the temple looks great in the moonlit night. Later in the afternoon visit to Tiger’s Cave. Tiger's Cave is just 4 kilometers off to the main monument complex of the Mahabalipuram beach. The place is actually an open-air theatre, where activities and programs highlighting the cultural heritage of Tamilnadu are held. The beach at Chunnambar also known as Plage Paradiso is located near the mouth of the backwater. Thanjavur, the royal city, also has a rich and varied heritage for which it is known across the globe. The city has always been the center of knowledge, art, and culture that reached its peak between the 10th and 14th centuries, under the reign of the mighty Cholas. The city is still proud of its cultural heritage and continues to be the centre of classical arts and music in spite of the advent of the technology era. Now proceed your trip with the famous Brihadeswara temple. The Brihadeswara temple is one of the most ancient and the most celebrated Hindu temple in the world. The UNESCO has adjudged this thousand years old temple a "World Heritage Site". Brihadeswara is the most illustrious and a brilliant example of the Dravidian style temple architecture. The building that carries the main sanctum is known as the 'Periya Kovil'. This stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. A total of seven concentric walls enclose the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple and the total length of these walls is 32,592 enclosed by 21 Gopurams (towers). The hall of 1000 pillars is the most awesome part of the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple/Srirangam temple. It is interesting to note that the term Kovil, which signifies temple in the Tamil language, is used by many Vaishnavas in reference to this temple, which signifies the importance of the Ranganathaswamy temple for them. Lord Ranganathar, the presiding deity of the temple, is praised by various names by his devotees such as "Nam-Perumal, "Azhagiya Manavalan" and his divine consort Ranganayaki is lovingly called as "Thayer" (Holy Mother). Then visit the Rock temple. The Rock Fort temple complex in Tiruchirappalli is an important and famous monument in Tamilnadu. The Rock Fort temple complex comprises of three temples - the Manikka Vinayaka temple, the Uchhi Pillayar Koyil and the Taayumaanava Koyil (Shivastalam) on the hill. The Rock Fort Temple at Tiruchirapalli is the most famous landmark of this town.
