At its foot lies the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid, the first Muslim mosque in India erected in the 12th century on the site of a Hindu temple, from materials salvaged from 27 demolished Hindu and Jain shrines a monument built by Edwin Lutyens to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in the World War and the Afghan Wars, to the Parliament building and the Rastrapathi Bhawan, the President's residence.
